Lucy

I love Lucy.  She is three.  And she doesn't let me forget it--both in word and deed.  I think she got my strong will and persistence (which translates into she will fight me to the end on something she wants or thinks needs to happen).  Is it possible for some characteristics to be given, or handed over, from parent to baby when they are born?  I really think Maddie took a bit of my strong will out of me when she was born and Lucy took a double portion when she came along.  Lucy, you are welcome! It's served me well and will for you, too.

Lucy is fiercely loyal, very protective, also nurturing like Madeleine, and is so so playful.  She wants to solve all problems and make-better all the hurts.  When Matt is telling her a story and the main character is hurt or has a problem (the height of the story) Lucy can't help herself and interjects: "I know what I could do to help her!" or "I could save her and do..." There is no problem Lucy doesn't have a solution for.  She is quick.  She loves to tease.  She loves to be chased and chase.  She (and Maddie) have a laugh that is the most beautiful, cheerful, uplifting sound I think I might ever hear.  Their giggles together or with Matt and I make the worst days sweeter and the most frustrating tantrums seem not-to-bad-after-all.  At night lately Lucy's been sitting on and squishing Madeleine.  Maddie rolls her off and they both laugh uncontrollably.  And then Lucy climbs back on top and it repeats. Melts my heart.  I think I let them postpone bedtime fifteen minutes one night just because I loved hearing their laughing.

Lucy adores Maddie and Madeleine is usually quite good at including Lucy in the neighborhood fun and games around the house. Lucy likes to dress "girly" and play with dress up clothes and jewelry.  She loves stickers, her balance bike, play-dough, and playing "family" with Madeleine and their dolls. She also loves books.  Sometimes she will get her own books and "read" the stories out loud to herself.  When I read to her she expects me to let her have a turn "reading" after I finish.  Sometimes she lets me know she's mad if I forget to give her a turn "reading."  I'm quick to remedy that problem!

Lucy is still so cuddly and affectionate.  Lucy makes my heart ache with love for her.  She loves to  be held, tickled, carried, "nudged" (when I tickle her with my nose), and sit together.  She loves to snuggle close to me when we read books before nap time and bed time. She falls asleep sucking her thumb and twirling her hair.  Sometimes she tickles my face with her hair and sometimes I tickle her face with either hers or my own hair back.  She loves it.

She is very friendly like Madeleine while also being shy and dependent on me to help her in social situations.  Maddie was the same way at this age.  As a two or three-year old Maddie got worn out if we went more than a couple places back to back, or if we had a lot of friends over.  Lucy is such a great sport about going along with Maddie's pace that I've forgotten lately that she's barely three.  She's had more temper tantrums than usual lately and I realized the other day it's because we have been so busy the past month.  Lots of people, lots of places, lots of things to do.  She doesn't complain and so it had been baffling me why she would all of a sudden melt down and fight over nothing.  I prayed and thought a lot about it and it dawned on me a couple days ago that she needs me to slow things down for her.  She loves to play at home.  She loves to have lots of time to make-believe with just Maddie and me.  She likes having her own space and the freedom to play what and how she wants.  We are so grateful that the house and yard are free range and safe for the girls to play wherever they please.  It gives them so much liberty and they amaze me with how creative they are.  Home is really Lucy's happy place, with occasional outings and one or two friends to play with at a time.  At least for now.  It won't surprise me if she wants to have friends over all day everyday in a couple of years.  :)

I expect this is going to be a great year for Lucy.  Madeleine will be in school everyday and get her own social time.  Lucy will get to do more one-on-one-things with just me and get to be a three year old again instead of trying to keep up with a five year old all day.  We will still get play time with Maddie since her school does half day kindergarten.  And Lucy will get to be the "big sister at home" when the baby is born; run the roost, so to speak, while Maddie's gone.

When Maddie does start school I plan to have a special Lucy-Mommy time that we will continue after the baby is born.  It'll be similar to the practice school Maddie and I did last year, but simpler.  The main goal is to give Lucy and I something fun to work on together that's semi-educational but mostly just fun. Something to help her still feel like a big kid as Maddie starts school and valued/remembered when the baby comes a couple months later.

Lucy and dad. She loves to squeeze our cheeks and affectionately says "cute chubby cheeks!" It's kind of become a fun game that came from us loving on her fantastic, adorable baby cheeks.

Laying in my lap, looking up at the hot air balloons during the Freedom Festival last month. She's wearing Maddie's Anna costume that I made last Halloween.  Lucy probably wore this dress almost every day (except when I made her take it off to wash it) for a couple of months.  :)

Oh I love my Lucy!
