Milk jugs and the Provo River

Last Saturday I got to go on the maiden voyage of the summer milk-jug raft.  It was quite exciting and it floated really well.  Back in May or June, I was talking one day with a few friends and we were brainstorming what kinds of things we wanted to accomplish this summer.  One suggestion was to get airborne.  My suggestion was to make something sea-worthy.  And then it happened--the vision of a milk-jug raft came to my mind and we decided we would make it happen.  By mid-July we had maybe 15 or 20 gallon jugs collected.  When I got to Utah at the beginning of August, Ked Hamblin, pictured in front of me on the milk jug raft, had collected about 90 more.  He did the washing and storing and Trevor helped with the construction.

I was a little nervous because the river moves pretty swiftly even though there aren't any rapids.  It turned out just fine though and I loved the short but successful ride.

We got brave after we realized it was floating really well.  I feel like reading a good childrens' adventure book when I look at this picture.  Tom Sawyer, anyone?

    That is the coolest raft I ever saw!!! It reminds me of something your brother Michael would make!!! He was over here last night when I was looking at it and I showed it to him and I think he was quite impressed with it too!!! When you told me you were going to make a raft out of milk jugs I couldn't imagine 1)what it would look like and 2) that it would work, but I guess you showed me!!! I wouldn't take it out into the Gulf of Mexico but it sure looks amazing! You should be in some kind of magazine for adventurers! Now if Michael can just make that plane that he said he could make that could just fly to Bauder Elementary . . .

    Ked is a very nice boy. He and Madeline are getting married this October (she is in green). I'm really excited for them.

Capitol Reef

We went to Capitol Reef National Park a few weeks ago and did some hiking while we were there.  It was a short but pleasant trip.  I'd love to go back sometime when the orchards are ready to harvest and take some fruit home with us.  It'd be nice to do some more hiking there too. Can you tell where we went to school?  It seems like we end up with an inordinate amount of BYU clothing in our bags whenever we go on vacation. She kept reaching for my sun glasses and so I finally handed them to her.  She was very pleased. Playing in the hotel room.  Matt really wanted to do a hike in some narrows and so we did this one.  It was really wide here, at the beginning.  We went a mile or so in and the canyon walls were only about 15 or 20 feet apart from each other.
